“… This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.”

-1 Peter 1:4

My all-time favorite song is Brad Paisley’s “When I Get Where I’m Going” featuring Dolly Parton. It’s a simple song. But it gives us three essential truths about heaven.

Truth #1: Heaven will be full of adventure

Or I might find out what it’s like to ride a drop of rain

– lyrics from “When I get Where I’m going”

Some people talk about heaven as a boring place, but that’s a lie. Would a God who created waterslides in rivers, hills for rolling down, mountains for climbing, and animals for riding create a boring final destination for His children?

Genesis 1 tells the story of creation. God worked. He imagined and made. We can’t know everything that heaven holds, but we know it’ll be fun. And think of the loved ones who await you there. You think there is any way those people are going to let heaven be dull? No way! We’ll be laughing and joking with Jesus; the angels will lead us in songs as we bound care-free down the streets of gold. Schlitterbahn won’t hold a candle to the water passages we race down. Six Flags will be child’s play to the mountains we fly from.

Truth #2: Heaven will be free of fear

And I’ll leave my heart wide open, I will love and have no fear

– lyrics from “When I get Where I’m going”

If paragliding off mountains and riding natural roller coasters sounds terrifying, don’t worry. There is no fear in heaven.

I hated roller coasters when I was little. I’d think: What if my belt comes unbuckled? What if the ride gets stuck? I experienced more worry than thrill.

Heaven will be different. There will be no fear. Death won’t be a word. The trials and struggles of our lives will be long gone. Imagine waking up and everything being right. Your work is fulfilling, your journeys are care-free, your friends are unlimited, and your access to God is unhindered.

Truth #3: Heaven is full of happy tears

Oh, when I get where I’m going, There’ll be only happy tears

– lyrics from “When I get Where I’m going”

I love happy tears. Crying from pain is miserable, but tearing up with joy is wonderful. It’s that feeling the Holy Spirit gives you when He lets you know you are loved and secure. There will be no miserable tears in heaven, and I am so ready for that. Every tear shed will be because we are living in the full presence of our awesome God.

We’ll be reunited with loved ones, and we will overflow with celebration. Imagine hugging Jesus, playing ball with Paul and Peter, drawing with David, and enquiring with Esther. It’s going to be good, y’all.
